LEWIS CARROLL's DIARIES

Four volumes and seven individual pages are missing from Lewis Carroll's private diaries. The presumption is that most if not all of them were destroyed by his family after his death. All of this material, with the exception of a single page, belongs to the same ten-year period, 1853-63. possible unhappy love affair at this time. One very noticeable aspect is that in the time covered by the largest single gap - 1858-62 - something seems to have happened to Carroll, as when the diary begins again, on May 9 1862, it is littered with expressions of unexplasined guilt and pain that were noticeably absent before. It's been suggested Carroll may have been involved in an unhappy,possibly adulterous love affair at this time, and this was the reason his family removed large chunks of his diaries. It's also been suggested the expressions of guilt and the missing diaries are connected with his growing religious problems end eventual rejection of the priesthood
